RCMP encourage use of the 9PM Routine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE File: 1470.01

Cranbrook RCMP Remind Residents Of 9PM Routine As Reports Of Theft From Vehicles Increase Cranbrook, BC (November 4, 2024)

Cranbrook RCMP has reported a rise in theft from vehicles, with 68 incidents logged in the third quarter (July to September 2024), compared to just 24 in the previous quarter. Many of these thefts occurred from unlocked vehicles, often containing valuables left inside. The rise in these kinds of thefts isn't unique to Cranbrook and are frequently opportunistic. To combat this, the RCMP encourages residents to adopt a nightly “9PM Routine” aimed at enhancing security.

This routine involves:

• Locking your doors (both vehicles and residence)

• Removing valuables, spare keys, and garage door openers from vehicles • Securing garages and sheds

• Storing yard tools and recreational equipment safely

• Activating exterior lights and security systems

“Removing valuables in plain sight in an unlocked vehicle or around your home in an important step in deterring crime,” says Staff Sergeant Barry Graham, Detachment Commander, Cranbrook RCMP. “Don’t make yourself an easy target. By taking part in the 9PM Routine and securing your property, you are making a significant contribution to reducing and preventing property crime in our community.” Using the repeat calendar function on your personal electronic device is a simple way to remind yourself of the 9PM Routine. Residents are also encouraged to use motion sensor lights on the exterior of their property and if applicable, ensure CCTV cameras are positioned to provide the best angle.
